Subject:           VR4 Suspension - at last

Date:             Monday, 5 July 1999 17:21

I've got my suspension - at last.

Koni's all round,
22mm sway bars
Springs
Bushes
Camber/Castor kits

 i.e. The works

 Assessment.

1 - As you guys know, the previous owner had cut the springs to lower the car.  The result was that due to the huge increase in rebound rate, my poor original shocks really had trouble controlling rebound.

The new springs are excellent, the car sits at much the same height (2" below stock), but the harshness of the suspension is completely gone.  It feels great, and the shockers are doing the work, whereas previously, there was a definite feeling that the springs were coming in much too early.

2 - The ride is about the same firmness as before, but no harshness over bumps.

3 - Steering/cornering is MUCH MUCH improved.  The usually 4WD understeer is completely gone.  There is even a touch of oversteer, easily controlled making cornering a real blast.

4 - The amount of steering needed to go around a corner seems to be reduced also.

5 - I did not go with removing the rear rack, I'll see.  I may have a slight suspicion, that the rear rack may be fighting the cornering a little with the current settings??

I am yet to really get aggressive with the cornering, I'll wait for a more appropriate venue.  Anyway, I'm very happy with the results, but the camber/castor kit for the rear didn't fit, are you working on that??

NEXT:

I want to improve the brakes, I'm getting some Pagid pads, and hopefully some braided lines, if they are not too expensive.

After a 4 month wait (those Konis are sure hard to get), you have one happy customer.  Any VR4 owners out there who want good handling on tarmac, rather than gravel, Id recommend this setup.

See Ralph at Trutrack in Leveson st Nth Melbourne.  This was the first VR4 he's done, but he did his research, and it shows!!

BTW, tell him I called.
